I listened to them after Unbreakable and it wasn't pleasant. The entire vocal production is different on this album and she hasn't sounded this vocally strong since the 1980s which is pretty incredible! My theory is she wanted to sound like Michael on "Make Me" as it was meant to be a semi-tribute and she sounded so great they used the same techniques throughout this album.Ĭompare it to the vocals on the three albums prior to this and she just sounds so lifeless and flat on them. Even the way she uses her falsetto (including as an adlib) is so Michael. It isn't just the singing in the lower register, she seems to have layered her vocals just like he did and taken to using his vocal ticks and grunts.
I definitely agree she sounds more like Michael than ever on this album. Jackson stands now: “Our love ain’t no material thing/Inshallah see you in the next life.” “Inshallah” means “God willing.” Then the chorus determinedly looks forward from where Ms. With breezy vocal harmonies, “Broken Hearts Heal” reminisces about a childhood full of singing and laughing together. The tribute to Michael Jackson turns out to be unexpectedly upbeat. And “Lessons Learned” builds a folky refuge in a song about an abused, codependent woman.
